Chalk-a-thon
September 18, 1:30-3:30pm – Mural kick-off
September 19, 9:00am-7:00pm – Open chalk mural drawing
Lamont Gallery Main Entrance (Weather permitting)

Lines, lines, and more lines! Help us create a collaborative chalk drawing on the stairs and walkways leading to the Lamont Gallery in celebration of our current exhibition, THROUGH LINE! Inspired by the chalk line mural created by exhibiting artist August Ventimiglia, participants are invited to use similar materials to get creative and transform our entrance into a work of art!

We’ll kick off this event on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 1:30 with the help of Mr. Jake Josef, Technical Director in the Theater and Dance department. Work with Jake and Lamont Gallery staff to use chalk line tools to create the framework lines for the mural on pathways around the Lamont Gallery. Come for a few minutes or stay for an hour!

We will have chalk available for you to stop by and add to the line mural on Thursday, Sept. 19.

THROUGH LINE Reception
September 19, 5:00-7:00pm
Lamont Gallery

Join us as we celebrate the opening of THROUGH LINE!  Each of the six artists on view in this exhibition explores line through the lens of their distinct practices and mediums, ranging from marker to string, chalk, and even dirt. Engage with several of the artists on view, enjoy light refreshments, and add your own lines to the ongoing chalk mural leading to the Lamont Gallery’s main entrance during the event!

Campus Chiral Drawing
September 19 – November 23
Hallspace Gallery

Lamont Gallery invites members of the community to help shape a community drawing project, inspired by Rachel Perry’s Chiral Line series. Perry’s body of work is made by drawing a singular line using her right and left hand on the corresponding sides of a sheet of paper. Using pen, pencil, crayon, colored pencil, and marker, each subsequent line follows the previous and creates an almost seismic quality, recording the history of the mark making, and the hands before it.

The “rules” are simple:

  1. Each participant chooses one writing implement.
  2. Use your right and left hand to create a new line, following the ebb and flow of the previous line drawn, trying to replicate it as closely as possible.

This Campus Chiral Drawing will be on the wall of the Hallspace Gallery located outside the Lamont Gallery. Rachel will start the drawing during the Opening Reception on September 19 and the community can continue to add lines until the end of the exhibition or once the wall is full!

Neuro Doodle
October 2, 1:30-2:30
Lamont Gallery Classroom

This simple, meditative drawing project is inspired by Neurography- A creative drawing process that can help to reduce stress and create an overall sense of well-being. The Neuro Doodle starts by drawing one long, loopy line and varying its weight and thickness. Draw inspiration from the artists in our current exhibition, THROUGH LINE, whose works explore the versatility of line. Once the lines are drawn in your Neuro Doodle, there will be time to experiment with a variety of other art materials such as watercolor, marker, pastel, and colored pencils.

All materials provided; no drawing experience is necessary. RSVP required. Please use this online reservation form.

Lunch and Learn with Carly Glovinski and August Ventimiglia
October 25, 12:45-1:45pm
Lamont Gallery

Lunch and Learn is a collaborative, casual talk with exhibiting artists Carly Glovinski, Rachel Perry, and August Ventimiglia. Grab a bite to eat and learn more about each of their art-making processes as we collectively explore our current exhibition, THROUGH LINE.

New Hampshire-based artist Carly Glovinski creates work that explores the make-do, resourceful attitudes associated with domestic craft and a reverence for nature and the great outdoors. The elements of time and place are embedded in her work, marked by labor and repetitive processes.

August Ventimiglia creates abstract drawings inspired by forms and processes in nature such as horizons, waves, tides, patterns, noises, and sounds. For THROUGH LINE Ventimiglia created a custom chalk wall drawing spanning more than 20 feet, directly on the Lamont Gallery’s newly renovated walls.

This event is free and open to all with lunch provided but space is limited. RSVP required. Please use this online reservation form.

Exquisite Corpse
October 30, 1:30-2:30pm
Lamont Gallery Classroom

The days are getting darker and there’s a chill in the air. Let’s celebrate Halloween with this fun drawing game and create some wild creatures… don’t worry, there are no actual corpses involved. Exquisite Corpse drawing exercises were created by Surrealist artists to stimulate creativity through collaboration.

In this game, each participant takes turns drawing a part of a creature on a piece of paper, folding it to conceal their contribution, and then passing it to the next person who will add their own part to the drawing. Then we’ll reveal the fun, crazy, and exquisite drawings!

And of course we’ll have Halloween treats to share.

All materials provided; no drawing experience is necessary. RSVP required. Please use this online reservation form.

Mock(tales): The Story of Installation with Katherine Mitchell DiRico and Lynne Harlow
November 7, 6:00 – 7:00pm
Lamont Gallery

Join us for a casual evening of art, conversation, and mocktails. Artists Katherine Mitchell DiRico and Lynne Harlow will discuss the stories behind each of their installations in our current exhibition THROUGH LINE. Guests will gain behind the scenes insight into the challenges and creative problem solving needed to bring site-specific installations to life. Come with questions and enjoy a night out at the gallery with drinks and hors d'oeuvres!

Katherine Mitchell DiRico uses drawing, sculpture, light, and sound elements to create multimedia installations that investigate how we negotiate connectivity and sense perception in today’s networked world. In THROUGH LINE, Mitchell DiRico continues to explore the ways in which drawing can be illustrated as a physical object, and a digital experience. The artist is engaging with Lamont Gallery’s architecture to create a site-specific installation by layering a projected video with tangible material elements such as thread and mylar.

Interdisciplinary artist Lynne Harlow uses her practice to explore the question, “How little is enough?” Her minimal work walks a delicate line between ridged, geometric abstraction and playful, amusing sculpture that practically begs to be touched. Working primarily in a monochromic, neon color palette, Harlow embodies the core spirit of the phrase, less is more. THROUGH LINE features three works by Harlow including a brand-new site-specific vinyl curtain suspended from the skylights just outside Lamont Gallery.

Mocktails and light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

This event is free and open to all. RSVP required. Please sign up using this online form.

Lines in the Sand
November 13, 1:30-3:00pm
Lamont Gallery Classroom

Create your own personal, portable, sand sculptures! Layer colored sand in glass bottles to create mini sandpainting’s. Inspired by the packed, dirt lines found in Patricia Rangel’s sculptures and Carly Glovinski’s Canning the Sunset series, explore the ways in which two of the artists exhibiting in THROUGH LINE use untraditional mediums as symbols for preserving a memory, place, and time.

All materials provided; space is limited. RSVP required. Online reservation form available soon.
